Fun Discovery from the Kitchen!

Thanks to my son, we went searching for a variety of answers about yeast tonight.  He didn't like my Biology 101 answers and he said I was overthinking it.  So I found a fun website and a kindred spirit in Minnesota.  There are science moms all over, and this one is the "Kitchen Pantry Scientist."  I love how she uses her talents in Art to better demonstrate and explain the topics she is sharing.  Enjoy!

Aldo Leopold Birthday

Since Aldo Leopold was born on January 11, I wanted to share how much I enjoyed reading his work during graduate school and beyond.  He was thoughtful, practical, informed, and passionate.  He was a pioneer in Forestry, and his influence is still felt in the public lands debates of today.

Happy Birthday to Aldo Leopold!
The Forest History Society says: "In honor of Aldo Leopold (born 1/11/1887), read Susan Flader's 1998 article "Aldo Leopold's Legacy to Forestry" from Forest History Today. Also look back at last year's blog post on Leopold by "Green Fire" filmmaker Steve Dunsky ("

FIRST FRC Robotics Kick-Off

Good luck to all the FRC teams as they learn about the new challenge for 2013.  I know they will work so hard in the next 2 months to build their robots.

Idaho Environmental Educators Association Conference

I had a great time at this conference last year, and I am planning to attend again in Boise on March 1 and 2.  I wanted to share the information now since the early bird registration fee is due on February 1.  If you teach any of the natural sciences or just enjoy incorporating environmental concepts into your curriculum, I would recommend you going to this Conference.  And the Zoo Boise visit should be so fun!  I loved the field trip last year to Birds of Prey.

Winter Geography and Science at CSI

Hi and welcome back!  It's a good day to recommit to this site, because I have missed sharing so many wonderful opportunities and stories about science and STEM.  I will start by introducing you to a free internet-based site that focuses on migrations.  Journey North is a great place to explore, whether you are a teacher or not.  I am teaching a community ed class on January 15 at CSI to review a few of the fun activities you can do with Journey North.  If you teach geography....I highly recommend you participate in Mystery Classroom.  The 2013 Season starts on January 28, and you receive weekly clues to help you explore the globe.   My class only costs $15 and it will be a fun night!  Call CSI at 208-678-1400 to register.
